SHELBY STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF HARRIET MIERS TO SUPREME COURT

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) made the following statement upon learning of President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court:

“I am pleased with President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court. I intend to carefully review her judicial philosophy and qualifications for this important position. I believe it is imperative that the Senate continue to confirm judges who will interpret the Constitution and the law without prejudice and with the utmost respect for the rule of law.”

“Further, I was pleased with the civility in which Judge Roberts’ nomination was considered. I am hopeful that Ms. Miers is afforded the same respect, and that the Senate will operate in a fair manner and afford her an up-or-down vote,” Shelby added.
