Conference Committee Approves Funding–House and Senate Scheduled to Approve Funding Tonight

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today $3.5 million for the University of South Alabama’s Gulf Coast Cancer Center and Research Institute. This money was included in the Omnibus Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2003. Sen. Shelby said, "I am very pleased that funding for this important project has been approved."

“I am very proud to have played an instrumental role in the creation of a regional academic cancer research institute at the University of South Alabama. As a cancer survivor, I know firsthand the importance of this regional center that will study the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer, as well as provide the upper Gulf Coast with greater local access to state-of-the-art cancer treatment,” Senator Shelby added.
