SEN. SHELBY URGES PRESIDENT TO DECLARE DISASTER AREAS IN NORTH ALABAMA

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) today called on President Bush to declare several Alabama counties disaster areas after last night's tornadoes and storms.

A copy of Senator Shelby's letter to President Bush is attached:

Dear Mr. President:

I am writing to urge that you declare a disaster in several north Alabama counties and communities hit by a series of tornadoes last night. It is my understanding, as of this morning, that at least 10 people have been killed in these storms and that while the extent of the damage has yet to be fully determined, it is expected to be quite severe.

I have spoken with Director Allbaugh and I understand that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is already coordinating with our State agencies to provide necessary short term disaster assistance. I further expect the State of Alabama to make a formal request for disaster assistance and ask for your quick response in addressing the needs of our communities. I commend you for your strong leadership and for your assistance in this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

Senator Richard C. Shelby
