SHELBY COMMENDS APPROVAL OF MICHAEL CHERTOFF TO LEAD HOMELAND SECURITY DEPT

WASHINGTON, D. C.--- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) today commended Senate approval of Judge Michael Chertoff as the new Secretary of Homeland Security, replacing outgoing secretary Tom Ridge. Senator Shelby made the following remarks upon Senate approval of Judge Chertoff’s nomination:

“I am pleased that the Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of Judge Michael Chertoff to serve as our nation’s next Secretary of Homeland Security. This cabinet position is of utmost importance as we continue to fight the war on terrorism and protect our homeland. I have known Judge Chertoff for many years and believe he is up to the task.”

“The Department of Homeland Security unifies a vast number of organizations and institutions involved in the efforts to secure our nation. This department, comprised of 180,000 employees, requires strong leadership at the helm. From border security to emergency preparedness to immigration, this department is diverse in its mission, and I am confident Judge Chertoff will provide strong and determined leadership in this post.”
