WASHINGTON, D. C. -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) today reacted to the recommendations released by the Department of Defense for Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). Senator Shelby made the following statement upon reviewing their recommendations:

“I am pleased to see that the Department of Defense (DoD) has reaffirmed our Active Duty bases’ contributions to national security by keeping them off the closure list. Overall, Alabama’s installations will actually increase in terms of both missions and personnel. Anniston Army Depot, Fort Rucker, and Redstone Arsenal will see a gain in jobs. I am, however, disappointed to learn that Maxwell Air Force Base will see a loss in personnel. I intend to work with the BRAC commission to fully understand the impact of this recommendation.”

“We must remember that today’s recommendations are just that – recommendations. Until the BRAC process is complete, Alabama must continue to demonstrate the extreme importance our military bases have on our national security needs. This is just the beginning, and I look forward to working with DoD and the BRAC commission as this process moves forward.”
