Shelby: Missile Defense Needed Now

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today released the following statement in response to Iranian state media reports of successful long- and medium-range ballistic missile tests.  According to Iranian media, Tehran test-fired nine missiles, including a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which has a range of 1,240 miles, making it capable to reach parts of Israel.

“Iran’s ballistic missile test is yet another example of why we need to continue to aggressively enhance our missile defense capabilities and work to establish a Third Site in Europe,” said Shelby.  “I am proud of the missile defense work conducted in north Alabama that furthers our efforts to protect the U.S. and our allies from rogue and unpredictable nations.  I intend to maintain my efforts to secure funding to strengthen our missile defense program.  While Tehran’s launches were just a test, the United States and her allies cannot afford to wait for an operational attack before taking preventative measures.”
