SENATOR SHELBY COMMENTS ON THE PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS TO A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) responded to President Bush's address to a joint session of Congress:

"I look forward to working with the President to implement many of the important national priorities he addressed tonight. In particular, I am pleased with the emphasis he has placed on education. His proposal provides a firm framework for improving the education of every child in American by promising significant increases in federal resources and greater local flexibility to our nation's schools. This has to be one of our top domestic priorities."

"In addition, I strongly support many of the President's top priorities such as ensuring the long-term solvency of Medicare and Social Security, providing tax relief for all Americans, eliminating the national debt and slowing the growth of federal spending."

"I believe we have a tremendous opportunity to make a positive difference in government and in the lives of every American."
