SEN. SHELBY ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION FUNDING FOR ANNISTON AND SURROUNDING AREA

Subcommittee Passes Transportation Appropriations Bill

U. S. Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury and General Government announced approval of important transportation funding for Anniston.

Sen. Shelby said, "I am pleased that the bill provides significant funding for several Anniston area projects. These funds reflect our commitment to safe and efficient transportation and infrastructure."

Sen. Shelby said, "I am pleased that we were able to include a significant increase in highway funding for the State of Alabama. Alabama will receive an estimated $610 million in highway funds for Fiscal Year 2004, which represents an increase of $54.4 million from last year's funding level."

Center for Domestic Preparedness
The bill provides $8.5 million to the Federal Aviation Administration to develop a program to analyze and study cabin air decontamination in airplanes. Of these funds, Alabama's Center for Domestic Preparedness will receive $3.75 million to develop an operations and training program of procedures and techniques for aircraft decontamination.

Sen. Shelby said, "This funding will allow the Center for Domestic Preparedness at Fort McClellan to have a state-of-the-art facility to study airborne viruses that breakout in airplanes."

Anniston Federal Courthouse
Sen. Shelby said, "Our bill provides $4.4 million for site and design needs for the Anniston Federal Courthouse."

Anniston East Bypass
Sen. Shelby said, "This bill provides $3 million for the East Bypass in Anniston. The project will provide direct access from Fort McClellan to Interstate 20. This is an important project for the Anniston community and I am pleased that we were able to include the much needed funding."
