U.S. Senator Richard C. Shelby commented today regarding Senator Jim Jeffords' departure from the Republican party:

"If you support bigger government, higher taxes and more spending, you ought to be a Democrat. I didn't and that's why I left the Democratic party."

"Senator Jeffords is an honorable man and I hope he is as comfortable with his decision as I have been with mine."
