Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby is talking tough about the immigration reform bill pending in the Senate. He said yesterday he supports treating illegal aliens with tough measures and said he will NOT support a provision giving illegal immigrants amnesty.
The Tuscaloosa Republican said if it passes, it would be a terrible precedent.
Shelby thinks the U.S. can solve the issue by enforcing border crossings and deporting illegals immigrants already in the country. Fellow Alabama Sen. Jeff Session also opposes the amnesty proposal.
Meanwhile, the fragile immigration overhaul compromise comes under more fire today on Capitol Hill.
The complicated plan includes provisions to tighten up the borders but also give quick legal status to the estimated 12 million immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally.
