Ceremony held at the Marriott honors Sen. Richard Shelby
Alabama senior lawmaker presented with a top award from the National Defense Industrial Association, Tennessee Valley Chapter on Friday.
Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, was presented with the Medaris Award during a ceremony at the Huntsville Marriott.
"Maj. Gen. Medaris was a dedicated leader who moved our nation forward in the engineering and scientific fields related to missile development," said Shelby. "As a strong supporter of national defense, I believe it is imperative to never be complacent in the developmental field. Simply put, we work for the war-fighter and the war-fighter deserves no less than excellence."
The Medaris Award was first presented in 1981 in recognition of the accomplishments of Army Maj. Gen. John B. Medaris, who was the first commanding general of the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency, the forerunner to today's Army Space & Missile Defense Command.
Medaris was a former commanding general of the Army Ordnance Missile Command and a leader in the Army's space exploration efforts.
