U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture 2006 Hurricane Assistance Program sign-up will begin May 17, 2006. The $250 million in funding will go towards four crop and livestock programs providing aid to producers affected by hurricanes in 2005. To sign up, producers may visit their local farm service agency on or after May 17, 2006.

Senator Shelby said, “I am pleased that USDA is providing this assistance to farmers affected by last year’s hurricane disasters. As we enter this year’s hurricane season, we must continue to find ways to rebuild those areas affected by these catastrophic natural disasters. I encourage all those Alabamians eligible for this funding to take advantage of this opportunity and sign up.”

The four programs, funded by Section 32, are for livestock, feed, hurricane, and tree indemnity. Producers in the following counties who experienced hurricane damage are eligible: Autauga, Baldwin, Bibb, Butler, Chambers, Choctaw, Clarke, Clay, Cleburne, Coffee, Colbert, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Cullman, Dallas, Escambia, Geneva, Greene, Hale, Henry, Houston, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Mobile, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Washington, Wilcox, and Winston.
